📜 October 7: On This Day in History

That was a close one

Image: Unknown

Each of the following events happened on October 7. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Georgia Tech defeats Cumberland University, 222-0, in the most-lopsided game in college football history. Speculation remains that John Heisman—the legendary football figure who at the time was Georgia Tech’s head coach—ran up the score because he thought Cumberland had previously used professional players to beat Georgia Tech 22-0 in baseball, a sport that Heisman also coached.
  • B) US and British warplanes begin bombing Taliban targets in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. The Afghanistan War would go on to span two decades, becoming the longest war in US history.
  • C) Fox News Channel, a satellite and cable news network created by Roger Ailes for Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, is launched in the US. It’s currently the most-watched cable news network in the US, and, as of 2023, generates approximately 70% of its parent company’s pre-tax profit (Fox Corporation).
  • D) Hamas launches an attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing ~1,200 people and taking more than 240 hostages (the deadliest single day of violence in Israel since its founding in 1948). Read more in tomorrow morning’s newsletter, where we’ll be covering this event—and its aftermath—in great depth (sign up here).

Hint: You only need to move one event to lock in the correct order
