📜 October 8: On This Day in History

It’s a hot topic

Image: Gemini (prompting by Peter Nowak)/Canva/Various clothing brands (logos)

Each of the following events happened on October 8. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Southdale Mall, the nation’s first enclosed shopping mall, opens in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. The concept’s creators, Donald Dayton—head of Dayton’s department store—and Austrian-born architect Victor Gruen, hope the climate-controlled design will lure more shoppers to stores during frigid winters (it does).
  • B) 37 fires break out across the Great Lakes region—three of which are massive (and deadly). The Great Chicago Fire kills 300, the Great Michigan Fire 300-500, and the Wisconsin Peshtigo Fire, history's deadliest, kills least 1,200.
  • C) Raytheon Manufacturing Company files a patent for what becomes a staple kitchen appliance: the microwave oven. Invented by Raytheon employee Percy Spencer by accident after he found a melted Payday candy bar in his pocket while fiddling with a microwave radiation-emitting magnetron, it now sits in over 90% of US homes.
  • D) The Office of Homeland Security is founded, less than one month after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Now a cabinet department, Homeland Security is now one of the largest organs of the federal government, charged with preventing terror attacks, border security, immigrations and customs, disaster relief and prevention, and other related tasks, the History Channel reports.

Hint: Headed to the mall? Make sure to ‘wave for the paparazzi before you get inside.
