📜 October 14: On This Day in History | | Say whatttt | Image: Miramax | Each of the following events happened on October 14. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) Pulp Fiction, a crime drama made by writer-director Quentin Tarantino for less than $10 million, premieres in theaters. The movie—a huge critical hit, winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and securing seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture—goes on to earn $100+ million at the box office. The film is also credited with reviving the movie career of John Travolta, who portrays the ponytailed hit man Vincent Vega.
- B) Keeping Up with the Kardashians premieres. The reality TV show’s huge popularity helps make various family members major celebrities, notably Kim Kardashian.
- C) American test pilot Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to break the sound barrier, traveling 662+ mph over Rogers Dry Lake in Southern California in an experimental aircraft built by Bell Aircraft Company (and then celebrating with
Yeager-bombs Jägerbombs, probably). For years, many aviators had believed that humans were not meant to fly faster than the speed of sound, theorizing that transonic drag rise would tear any aircraft apart. - D) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Arthur Conan Doyle, is published. The book was the first collection of Holmes stories, which Conan Doyle had been publishing in magazines since 1887. Fun fact: Sherlock was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, a teacher of Doyle’s at the University of Edinburgh with extraordinary deductive power.
Hint: In last?? Make sure you’re keeping up. |
