📜 October 15: On This Day in History | | Wild and bear-free | Image: Shutterstock/Canva | Each of the following events happened on October 15. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) A final conference on the Antarctic Treaty convenes in Washington, DC. Six weeks later, following negotiations, the treaty is signed by 12 countries, preserving the polar bear-free continent—whose name serendipitously means “no bears”—for scientific study.
- B) China becomes the third country to launch a crewed spaceflight. Shenzhou 5, piloted by Yang Liwei, orbits Earth 14 times during its 21-hour flight.
- C) Congress passes the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act in an effort to curb mob activity in the US (spoiler alert: it works). The law, also known as the RICO Act, amplifies penalties for people committing crimes as a part of organized criminal enterprises—under its provisions, anyone convicted could face up to 20 years in prison and be required to forfeit all profits earned through racketeering to the government.
- D) The US Senate votes 52 to 48 to confirm Clarence Thomas to the US Supreme Court; the 43-year-old Thomas replaces Thurgood Marshall, the first Black SCOTUS justice, who months prior had announced his retirement after three-plus decades. Thomas’ confirmation followed publicly televised hearings regarding sexual harassment allegations made against him by Anita Hill, a law professor who had previously worked under Thomas at the United States Department of Education and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Hint: If science isn’t first, you may need to RICOnvene the council. |
