Answers at the bottom! - A) Gangster Al Capone is convicted of tax evasion, signaling the downfall of one of the most notorious criminals of the 1920s and 1930s. Capone raked in millions of dollars from his underworld activities during the Prohibition, and once reportedly bragged: “They can’t collect legal taxes from illegal money.” Capone is subsequently sentenced to 11 years in federal prison and fined $50,000.
- B) A 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocks northern California during Game 3 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics at Candlestick Park, forcing postponement of the series for the next 10 days. The earthquake kills 67, injures 3,700+ others, and causes ~$5 billion in property damage.
- C) Texans officially approve a resolution to create the Texas Rangers, a corps of armed lawmen to defend local settlers against Native Americans and Mexicans, and to also serve as principal law enforcement along the sparsely populated Texan frontier. The Rangers later become the detective arm of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
- D) Eminem, one of the most controversial and best-selling artists of the early 21st century, is born. The Detroit native is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rappers in history, with his trophy case including 15 Grammy awards and one Oscar.
