📜 October 20: On This Day in History | | A graveyard smash | Image: Queens Museum | Each of the following events happened on October 20th. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The quirky and spooky song “Monster Mash” hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was recorded by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and Leonard Capizzi with a band they called The Crypt-Kickers. The song was originally rejected from 4 different labels until a radio station played the song and it became an instant hit.
- B) The US Senate approves a treaty with France providing for the purchase of the territory of Louisiana, which would double the size of the United States. Napoleon, who’s now facing war with Britain, decides to raise money for his war and simultaneously deny his enemy plum territory by offering to sell the entire Louisiana territory to the US for a mere $15 million.
- C) The Sydney Opera House opens. After 15 years of construction, the $80 million structure, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and funded by the profits of the Opera House Lotteries, is opened in Sydney, Australia. Famous for its geometric roof shells, the structure contains several large auditoriums and presents an average of 3,000 events a year to an estimated two million people.
- D) Hip-Hop icon Snoop Dogg is born. Born Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr., his mother nicknames him Snoop Dogg because he resembles the character Snoopy from Peanuts. Snoop’s music career, including hits like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Gin and Juice,” is later launched by Dr. Dre.
