📜 October 21: On This Day in History | | Art inside art | Image: @nyclovesnyc/Instagram | Each of the following events happened on October 21. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The Guggenheim Museum opens its doors. Thousands of people flock to New York City’s 5th Avenue masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. On top of being a piece of art itself, the museum houses one of the world’s top collections of modern art.
- B) The USS Constitution is launched. After two unsuccessful launches, the 44-gun US Navy frigate, built to fight Barbary pirates off the coast of Tripoli, is put to sea at Boston Harbor. The ship’s nickname, “Old Ironsides,” comes from its battle with a British naval vessel in the War of 1812, where they said the shots just bounced off the side of it.
- C) Explorer Ferdinand Magellan and three Spanish ships enter a strait at the tip of South America. The strait, located between the tip of South America and Tierra Del Fuego island, is the key to Magellan’s eventual successful circumnavigation around the globe, as it connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
- D) Ernest Hemingway publishes For Whom the Bell Tolls. Hemingway tells the story of a young American volunteer fighting with a Republic guerilla unit in the Spanish Civil War. The novel is an instant success and is widely considered to be Hemingway’s best work.
