  • B) Sam Houston is inaugurated as the first president of the Republic of Texas. Houston wins the election in a landslide after his historic victory at the battle of San Jacinto.
  • C) French philosopher and writer Jean-Paul Sartre wins the Nobel Prize for literature—and then declines it, becoming the first person ever to do so.
  • D) French balloonist André-Jacques Garnerin jumps out of a balloon over Paris using a silk parachute that he made himself, becoming the first person in history to parachute successfully.
