📜 October 24: On This Day in History

Look out below

Image: The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)

Each of the following events happened on October 24. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Annie Edson Taylor is the first person to successfully take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel, on her 63rd birthday. She lashed herself into a leather harness inside a custom 5x3 pickle barrel with cushions inside. After about 20 minutes, she was able to make it back to shore safely.
  • B) Western Union Telegraph Company links America’s eastern and western telegraph networks at Salt Lake City, Utah, completing a transcontinental line that for the first time allows instantaneous communication between Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.
  • C) The supersonic Concorde jet makes its last commercial passenger flight, traveling at twice the speed of sound from JFK International Airport in NYC to London’s Heathrow Airport.
  • D) The United Nations charter becomes effective and ready to be enforced. The United Nations is thrust into existence as a response to the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) of World War II. It’s essentially a new version of the old League of Nations, with an improved means of arbitrating international conflict and negotiating peace.
