📜 December 1: On This Day in History

Bus fair

Image: Britannica

Each of the following events happened on December 1. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Rosa Parks is jailed for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white passenger, a violation of the city’s racial segregation laws. The incident spawns the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott, organized by a young Baptist minister named Martin Luther King Jr.
  • B) Henry Ford installs the first moving assembly line for the mass production of an entire automobile. His innovation reduced the time it took to build a car from more than 12 hours to one hour and 33 minutes.
  • C) The Chunnel—a tunnel 132 feet below the English Channel—breaks through. The underwater tunnel links Great Britain with the European mainland for the first time in more than 8,000 years.
  • D) The US, Soviet Union, and 10 other nations sign the Antarctica Treaty, which bans military activity and weapons testing on the continent. It marks the first arms control agreement signed in the Cold War period.

Hint: Chunnel drillers finally reached the end.
