📜 December 15: On This Day in History

Planted in the Big Apple

Each of the following events happened on December 15. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The New York Americans lose to the Montreal Canadiens, 3-1, in the formal opening of New York's Madison Square Garden.
  • B) The first 10 amendments to the US Constitution, known collectively as the Bill of Rights, become the law of the land following ratification by Virginia. The amendments guarantee the freedom of speech, press, assembly, and exercise of religion; the right to fair legal procedure and to bear arms; and that powers not delegated to the federal government would be reserved for the states and the people.
  • C) Sioux leader and holy man Sitting Bull, one of the most famous Native Americans of the 19th century, is killed by Indian police at the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota.
  • D) The American Psychiatric Association issues a resolution stating that homosexuality is neither a mental illness nor a sickness, reversing a century-old decision.

Hint: Reversing course is typically a last resort

📜 Answers

B, C, A, D

  • B) 1791 – The Bill of Rights is ratified.
  • C) 1890 – Sioux leader Sitting Bull is killed. He was a fierce enemy of Anglo-Americans from a young age, believing that contact with non-Indians undermined the strength and identity of the Sioux and would lead to their ultimate decline.
  • A) 1925 – Madison Square Garden opens.
  • D) 1973 -–The American Psychiatric Association states that homosexuality is neither a mental illness nor a sickness. The APA’s statement comes a year after a dramatic moment in the org's annual meeting when a masked speaker calling himself “Dr. H. Anonymous” gave a speech beginning with the declaration: “I am a homosexual. I am a psychiatrist.”
