📜 January 6: On This Day in History

Catfished: The origin story

Image: BBC

Each of the following events happened on January 6. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Henry VIII marries Anne of Cleves, sight unseen, after viewing her painted portrait. When they first met, he is said to have exclaimed, "I like her not!" Six months later, the marriage is annulled.
  • B) Olympic hopeful Nancy Kerrigan is attacked at a Detroit ice rink following a practice session two days before the Olympic trials. A man hired by Tonya Harding’s ex-husband hit Kerrigan with a club on the back of her knee, causing the figure skater to miss the Olympic qualifying (which Harding won).
  • C) Schoolhouse Rock! debuts on ABC, during the heyday of Saturday morning children's television programming. It goes on to become one of the most successful education projects in US history.
  • D) Samuel Morse’s telegraph system is demonstrated for the first time at a facility in New Jersey. The telegraph, a device which uses electric impulses to transmit encoded messages over a wire, will eventually revolutionize long-distance communication.

A, D, C, B

  • A) 1540 – Henry VIII marries Anne of Cleves, then annuls the marriage after she doesn’t look like her painting. Thus making it the original catfish
  • D) 1838 – Samuel Morse’s telegraph system is demonstrated for the first time. In May 1844, Morse sent the first official telegram over the line, with the message: “What hath God wrought!”
  • C) 1973 – Schoolhouse Rock! debuts on ABC. The series was the idea of David McCall, an advertising executive of McCaffrey and McCall, who noticed his young son was struggling with learning multiplication tables, despite being able to memorize the lyrics of many Rolling Stones songs.
  • B) 1994 – Olympic hopeful Nancy Kerrigan is attacked at a Detroit ice rink. Kerrigan would go on to win a silver medal at the Olympics, while Harding placed 8th.

DISCLAIMER: *Based on a review conducted in May 2025 of nearly a dozen U.S.-based competitors offering hair regrowth products, none were found to offer a prescription-strength gummy formulation
