📜 January 9: On This Day in History

Trial of Joan-y Ives

Each of the following events happened on January 9. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveils the iPhone—a groundbreaking new touchscreen mobile phone with an iPod, camera, and Web-browsing capabilities—at the Macworld convention in San Francisco.
  • B) Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the history of California, takes his place on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
  • C) Trial begins for Joan of Arc, a peasant girl who, believing that she was acting under divine guidance, led the French army to a momentous victory that repulsed England’s attempt to conquer France. She is later accused of heresy and witchcraft (along with wearing men's clothing) by a church court sympathetic to the English.
  • D) Englishman Philip Astley stages the first-ever modern circus at an event in London. Astley, a former cavalry sergeant major, had previously found that if he galloped in a tight circle, centrifugal force allowed him to perform seemingly impossible feats on a horse’s back.
