Answers at the bottom! - A) Pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger performs the “Miracle on the Hudson,” safely landing a passenger plane he was piloting on NYC’s Hudson River after a bird strike caused its engines to fail. All 155 passengers and crew members survived the crash landing and were evacuated to safety.
- B) The American television series Happy Days, a nostalgic comedy set during the 1950s and '60s, premieres on ABC. The show gives birth to one of TV’s most beloved characters, Arthur Fonzarelli (aka “Fonzie” or “The Fonz”).
- C) Wikipedia, the exhaustive online encyclopedia, first comes online. The launch by developers Jimmy Wales and Lawrence Sanger comes less than a year after their first failed attempt at an online encyclopedia, called Nupedia.
- D) Fiery hot molasses floods the streets of Boston, killing 21 people and injuring scores of others. The molasses burst from a huge tank at the United States Industrial Alcohol Company building at the heart of the city.
