• C) The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is signed, ending the Mexican-American War in favor of the US. The Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo adds an additional 525K square miles of American territory, including the area that would become the states of Texas, California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.
• D) With Nome, Alaska, facing a widespread diphtheria outbreak, musher Gunnar Kaasen and his 13 dogs—led by the husky Balto—successfully deliver an antitoxin serum following a relay that covered 674 miles in 5.5 days, and featured temps as low as -85°F.
