📜 February 13: On This Day in History

Blockhead bravery

Each of the following events happened on February 13. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The last Peanuts comic strip is published in newspapers, just hours after the death of creator Charles Schulz. Schulz drew every strip—including the lettering and coloring——with no assistants through nearly 50 years.
  • B) Colonel Bernard J.D. Irwin, an assistant army surgeon, performs the earliest military action to be awarded a Medal of Honor. Irwin volunteers to go rescue 60 trapped men located roughly 100 miles away, making the journey on mules and horses.
  • C) The League of Nations recognizes the perpetual neutrality of Switzerland, which carries the oldest such policy in the world.
  • D) Astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating Copernican theory, which holds that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

Hint: Galileo is one of the first major figures in modern science.
