• C) In Nagano, Japan, the US defeats Canada 3-1 to win the gold medal in the first women's hockey tournament ever held at the Winter Olympics.
• D) China invades Vietnam following a series of anti-Chinese, pro-Soviet maneuvers by China's southern neighbor. The invasion is a response to Vietnam's ongoing efforts to bolster its ties with the Soviet Union following the Vietnam War, and results in a month-long war.
