📜 February 19: On This Day in History | | The road less traveled | Image: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring/Canva | Each of the following events happened on February 19. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The first rescuers reach surviving members of the Donner Party, a group of California-bound emigrants stranded by snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. After taking a newly blazed trail called “Hastings Cutoff,” the party endured great hardships and became stuck in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Of 89 original members, only 45 survive.
- B) The Chicago Seven are found guilty of inciting a riot at the August Democratic National Convention in Chicago, but acquitted of riot conspiracy charges.
- C) Operation Detachment, the US Marines’ invasion of Iwo Jima, is launched. For the US, Iwo Jima represents prime real estate on which to build airfields to launch bombing raids against Japan.
- D) Thomas Edison is awarded a US patent for his new invention, the phonograph, which is the first device to both record sound and play it back. The phonograph captures (or “embosses”) sounds on tin-foil-covered cylinders, which can be played back later.
Hint: The Donner Party were one of the first to take a “new” shortcut |
