📜 March 3: On This Day in History

O say can you see

Image: Smithsonian Magazine

Each of the following events happened on March 3. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making “The Star-Spangled Banner” America’s official national anthem. Francis Scott Key composed the lyrics to the song after witnessing the massive overnight British bombardment of Maryland’s Fort McHenry.
  • B) American adventurer Steve Fossett becomes the first person to complete a solo nonstop flight around the world without refueling, when he lands his airplane in Kansas after 67+ straight hours of flying.
  • C) Czar Alexander II decides Russia needs modernizing following a demoralizing defeat in the Crimean War and a surge of peasant revolts. His first priority is issuing an Emancipation Manifesto freeing the empire's 23 million serfs.
  • D) Parolee Rodney G. King stops his car after leading police on a nearly 8-mile pursuit through the streets of Los Angeles and is struck up 56 times by police with batons, suffering a fractured leg, multiple facial fractures, and numerous bruises and contusions. The incident and later acquittal of the officers sparks riots across LA.
