📜 March 13: On This Day in History | | I want YOU to ace this puzzle | Image: CNN | Each of the following events happened on March 13. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The first popular and widespread image of Uncle Sam appears in a US publication. The cartoon is credited to Frank Bellew, illustrator for The Lantern. Uncle Sam, an imposing whiskered gentleman with a top hat and striped trousers, serves as a symbol of America for years, especially in Army recruitment posters and fliers.
- B) Czar Alexander II, the ruler of Russia, is killed in the streets of St. Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of the “People’s Will” group. This group, which advocated for a peasant revolution eventually achieved by Vladimir Lenin, employed terrorism and assassination in their attempt to overthrow Russia’s czarist autocracy.
- C) German-born English astronomer William Herschel discovers Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun. It’s the first new planet discovered in modern times, and the first made by use of a telescope, which allowed Herschel to distinguish Uranus as a planet instead of a star.
- D) The US Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or K-9 Corps. Well over a million dogs would serve in that war, carrying messages and providing some measure of psychological comfort to the soldiers.
Hint: Uncle Sam was derived from two earlier figures: Yankee Doodle and Brother Jonathan |
