📜 March 17: On This Day in History

Luck of the Irish

Image: CNN

Each of the following events happened on March 17. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) St. Patrick dies in Saul, a village in Northern Ireland. Today, people around the world honor the late patron saint of Ireland with annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities on the anniversary of his death.
  • B) White South Africans overwhelmingly vote to end minority rule in a referendum that’s approved by a 68.7%-31.2% margin. It ends the turbulent period known as apartheid, where a nationwide system of harsh, institutionalized segregation targeted the country’s majority Black population, while the minority White population dominated politics, economics, and society.
  • C) The National Gallery of Art opens in Washington, D.C. The museum boasts an extensive collection of Western artwork, and currently features the only Leonardo da Vinci piece on display in the Americas.
  • D) The US Naval Research Laboratory launches Vanguard I, an aluminum sphere about the size of a cantaloupe, into orbit. It’s the first satellite to use solar cell power, and goes on to become the longest remaining human-made object in space.

Hint: The US launched three successful Vanguard satellites
