The natural disaster kills 695 people, injures ~13,000 others, and causes an inflation-adjusted ~$316 million in property damage. The tornado features a diameter of over a mile and travels at speeds in excess of 70 MPH.
- B) Two men pretending to be police officers steal 13 works of art valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The theft is widely considered the world's biggest art heist, with the stolen art never being recovered.
- C) Henry Wells and William G. Fargo join with several other investors to launch their namesake business, today one of the world's largest banks. Wells Fargo starts by contracting with stagecoach companies to provide fast transportation.
- D) After four months of widespread protest in America, the British Parliament repeals the Stamp Act, a taxation measure enacted to raise revenues for a standing British army in America.
