Answers at the bottom! - A) US medical researcher Dr. Jonas Salk announces on a national radio show that he successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio. Salk conducted the first human trials on former polio patients as well as himself and his family. Salk’s vaccine would effectively eliminate polio as a disease.
- B) A cartoon in the Boston Gazette titled “The Gerry-Mander” introduces the term gerrymandering. It refers to Massachusetts Gov. Elbridge Gerry, who signed into law oddly shaped voting district boundaries to help the incumbent party.
- C) Police enter a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, an exclusive suburb of San Diego, and discover 39 Heaven’s Gate cult members dead after a mass suicide. The cult’s leaders preached that such an act would allow them to enter an alien spacecraft hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet.
- D) F. Scott Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise is published, immediately launching the 23-year-old to fame and fortune. Fitzgerald would go on to write many more short stories and novels, including The Great Gatsby.
