📜 April 9: On This Day in History | | The Eighth Wonder | Image: The New York Times | Each of the following events happened on April 9. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The Houston Astrodome, nicknamed the world’s “Eighth Wonder,” opens its doors. It’s the world's first indoor, air-conditioned, domed sports stadium. The Astrodome would make history again one year later when it showcased the first-ever Astroturf installation.
- B) Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 troops to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox, Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War.
- C) Billy the Kid is found guilty of murdering the Lincoln County, New Mexico, sheriff following a one-day trial, and is sentenced to hang. Billy would escape custody before his hanging, but was soon tracked down and shot dead.
- D) René-Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle, claims the Mississippi River basin for France, naming it Louisiana. La Salle would later sail back down the Mississippi to establish a fort on the Gulf of Mexico, but was mutinied against and killed during the voyage.
Hint: The Astros were a bottom-dwelling team when the Astrodome opened |
