📜 April 13: On This Day in History

Nice to Met you

Image: Experience First

Each of the following events happened on April 13. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka the “Met”) is officially incorporated in NYC as the brainchild of American expatriates in Paris and several wealthy New Yorkers. The Met would quickly blossom into one of the world’s premier repositories of fine art, a position it still holds today.
  • B) New York City welcomes the first elephant in recorded history to step foot in America: a two-year-old Asian elephant from Bengal. She was soon sold for a princely sum of $10,000 and later embarked on a tour of the US East Coast for the next two decades.
  • C) The US reintroduces the previously discontinued $2 bill, which stopped production due to low usage. The $2 bill carries a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, born on April 13.
  • D) 21-year-old Tiger Woods wins the Masters by a record 12 strokes. It was Woods’ first of 15 career golf major victories, making him the youngest Masters winner ever and the first person of Asian or African heritage to ever win a major.

Hint: The first elephant in the US is thought to have gone by Old Bet
