📜 April 14: On This Day in History

The shot heard ‘round the world

Image: Ford’s Theater

Each of the following events happened on April 14. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) President Abraham Lincoln is shot in the head at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. The assassin, actor John Wilkes Booth, shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis! (Translation: Ever thus to tyrants!) The South is avenged,” as he jumps on stage and flees on horseback. Lincoln dies the next morning.
  • B) The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup for the fifth straight year, an NHL record that still stands today.
  • C) Noah Webster, a Yale-educated lawyer with an avid interest in language and education, publishes his American Dictionary of the English Language. The dictionary, which took him more than two decades to complete, is one of the first collections to include distinctly American words.
  • D) In what came to be known as “Black Sunday,” one of the most devastating storms of the Dust Bowl era sweeps across the region. High winds kick up clouds containing millions of tons of dirt, with dust so dense and dark that some eyewitnesses believe the world is ending.

Hint: Had Ulysses S. Grant not declined his invite, Booth would have had 2 targets that night
