The piece doesn’t become known until 40 years after Beethoven’s death, when a scholar finds and publishes it. The identity of "Elise" is unknown, though researchers have narrowed it down to three likely individuals.
- B) Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan is killed during a tribal skirmish on Mactan Island in the Philippines. Magellan had met with the local chief, who, after converting to Christianity, persuaded Magellan to assist him in conquering a rival tribe. Magellan is hit by a poisoned arrow during the fighting and dies.
- C) 22+ million South Africans turn out to cast ballots in the country’s first multiracial parliamentary elections. An overwhelming majority choose anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela to head a new coalition government, and he’s soon inaugurated as South Africa’s first Black head of state.
- D) World heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano retires from boxing at age 32. Marciano ends his career as the only heavyweight champion with a perfect record: 49 wins in 49 professional bouts, with 43 knockouts.
