📜 April 27: On This Day in History

Ludwig’s love story

Image: Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Each of the following events happened on April 27. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Ludwig van Beethoven finishes the legendary piano composition Für Elise (“For Elise”). The piece doesn’t become known until 40 years after Beethoven’s death, when a scholar finds and publishes it. The identity of "Elise" is unknown, though researchers have narrowed it down to three likely individuals.
  • B) Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan is killed during a tribal skirmish on Mactan Island in the Philippines. Magellan had met with the local chief, who, after converting to Christianity, persuaded Magellan to assist him in conquering a rival tribe. Magellan is hit by a poisoned arrow during the fighting and dies.
  • C) 22+ million South Africans turn out to cast ballots in the country’s first multiracial parliamentary elections. An overwhelming majority choose anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela to head a new coalition government, and he’s soon inaugurated as South Africa’s first Black head of state.
  • D) World heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano retires from boxing at age 32. Marciano ends his career as the only heavyweight champion with a perfect record: 49 wins in 49 professional bouts, with 43 knockouts.

Hint: Magellan was the first European to sail across the Pacific Ocean
