Hot potato

Each of the following events happened on April 30. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Mr. Potato Head becomes the first toy advertised on TV. The original kit has ~30 stick-on facial features—real spud not included. The ad helps Mr. Potato Head sell 1+ million units in its first year.
  • B) German leader Adolf Hitler kills himself by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head in his bunker. Soon after, Germany unconditionally surrenders to Allied forces, ending Hitler’s dream of a “Thousand-Year Reich.”
  • C) Computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee releases the source code for the world’s first web browser and editor. The browser, which he calls WorldWideWeb, becomes the first royalty-free, easy-to-use means of browsing the early internet.
  • D) English physicist J.J. Thomson announces the discovery of the electron, which helps revolutionize the knowledge of atomic structure. Thomson is later awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for his findings.
