📜 May 4: On This Day in History | | Do it for the Gramm | Image: Rolling Stone | Each of the following events happened on May 4. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The first Grammy Awards take place. Frank Sinatra comes in with the most nominations, at six—but his sole win is for the album cover of Only the Lonely. Meanwhile, The Chipmunks (later called Alvin and the Chipmunks) score three Grammys for their squeaky hit: "The Chipmunk Song."
- B) Over two dozen National Guardsmen fire their weapons at a group of anti-war demonstrators at Kent State University in Ohio, killing four students and wounding nine. The tragedy is a watershed moment for an America divided by the conflict in Vietnam, further galvanizing the anti-war movement.
- C) San Francisco Giants outfielder Willie Mays hits his 512th career home run, breaking the all-time National League record. Mays would finish his career with 660 home runs, the third-most in MLB history at the time.
- D) Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain’s first female prime minister. The Oxford-educated chemist and lawyer would serve three consecutive terms as UK PM—the longest continuous tenure in 150+ years—and earn the moniker of “Iron Lady.”
Hint: Frank Sinatra only won one Grammy at the inaugural awards show |
