📜 May 12: On This Day in History | | Rolling out of bed | Image: Rolling Stone | Each of the following events happened on May 12. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The Rolling Stones finish the studio recording of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” their first major hit song. It carries an unusual origin: The band's bleary-eyed lead guitarist Keith Richards had bolted up from his bed in the early morning hours, grabbed a tape recorder and laid down the song's opening riff (now considered one of the greatest ever). Richards then fell back asleep, not remembering playing any of it.
- B) Americans suffer their worst defeat of the Revolutionary War, when Major General Benjamin Lincoln and his ~7,000 troops surrender to the British at Charleston, South Carolina.
- C) The first undisputed flight over the North Pole is completed by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, American scientist Lincoln Ellsworth, and Italian engineer Umberto Nobile aboard the semirigid airship Norge.
- D) Pulp Fiction, directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Samuel L. Jackson, premieres at the Cannes Film Festival. It goes on to win the prestigious Palme d'Or, the highest honor at Cannes, months ahead of its US release.
Hint: The Norge is seen by some as the 2nd-ever North Pole flight (the initial flight is disputed) |
