🤗 The Sweet Spotlight

Bikes and trikes for everyone

Image: Krista Richard

Whether it’s pink with sparkles or a sleek blue racer, Krista Richard is on a mission to make sure every child experiences the simple joy of riding their very own bike.

The generous Canadian has run her Bikes and Trikes for Everyone program for the past 14 years, collecting donated bicycles and tricycles to repair with the help of a small volunteer team, and giving them away for free to families who otherwise couldn’t afford one.

It’s not just a few bikes here and there. Krista handed out 400+ bikes last year, with her overall total stretching into the thousands. More than 400 kids are currently on the program’s waiting list.

One of them was five-year-old Gracie Mae Brown, who recently got to choose her favorite ride from a lineup of 80+ bikes. According to her mother, the new bike has helped Gracie Mae reconnect with neighborhood friends after she outgrew her old bike and spent time stuck on the sidelines.

  • And she isn’t alone: at least 50 kids in her neighborhood have received bikes through the program.
  • “It helps them relieve stress and makes them behave better,” Gracie Mae’s mother said. “They’re getting fresh air. They’re getting exercise at the same time.”

The program has also expanded to include adult bikes for parents who want to make bike rides a regular family activity.

Krista believes that every kid should have a bike during the summer, just like she did growing up. And as long as she’s able, she plans to keep the wheels turning.

Strong in every sense of the word

Image: Tony Kershaw/SWNS

👆 Scott Endersby, an IT technician from the UK, recently became the first person ever to be crowned the Britain’s, England’s, and the World's Strongest Disabled Man all in the same year.

  • Scott lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in 2018.
  • The road back wasn’t easy, but today he describes the accident as a “blessing in disguise,” saying it gave him a sense of purpose he’d never had before.

Scott’s spent the years since proving that very little can slow him down. Next up: a bid for the Paralympics.

🍩 DONUT Holes

🍞 What started as a few loaves of bread for friends and family in the Portland, OR, area has turned into a full-on “honor system” bakery, run out of one dedicated woman’s driveway.

🐸 For one night each spring, hundreds of New Englanders unite for one common goal: to help guide frogs and salamanders cross the road safely.

🐳 Researchers are feeling hopeful after this year’s North Atlantic right whale baby boom. The critically endangered species saw 23 new calves born this season, the most in 15 years.

🐝 Just because it’s cute… Ever seen a “little bee library?” (~10-second Reel)

🏆 What’s Your Win?

🎉 Let’s celebrate

Welcome, What’s Your Win, to the section of the newsletter where we celebrate all of the good things happening right here within our Positive DONUT community.

Sadly, we didn’t receive any new submissions this week (cue tiny violin 😭🎻), so instead, I’m sharing some wins from this same week in years past. Because it really is never too late to celebrate!

Check them out below.

☀️ Elizabeth C. created small daily habits…

  • “I get up early every morning to get in a long walk in before work. I'm a night owl by nature, so this can be pretty difficult. For most of the year I walk in the dark. Yesterday I had the joy of watching the sun rise in one direction while watching the full moon set in the other direction. Sometimes all you need is a small joy to appreciate the value of your dedication, and yesterday's walk felt like just that. It was incredibly beautiful.”

🏆 Erin R. from Twin Cities, Minnesota, was one proud Mama…

  • “My 3 daughters' softball teams went 9-1 on Saturday (before mother's day). Oldest's team went 3-0 in a high school round robin. She took advantage of her limited opportunities and played well when she could. Middle took first in her tourney and she pitched the championship game to a 5-4 win. Youngest's team went 3-1 and took third in her tourney against some tough teams! I managed to watch 5 of the games in person and most of the games on the apps. So grateful to the people who make the videos happen so I can see them!”
