📜 May 28: On This Day in History | | Timelines go ape | Image: The Lance | Each of the following events happened on May 28. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) Harambe the gorilla is shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo after a three-year-old boy fell into his enclosure. The incident prompts debates in the US over how to handle the situation, and is often joked about as the moment where humanity’s timeline shifted into an absurd and chaotic alternative universe.
- B) Volkswagen is founded by the government of Germany, then under the control of Adolf Hitler, as a new state-owned automobile company. After less than a year under a different title, the automaker is renamed Volkswagenwerk, or “The People’s Car Company.”
- C) President Andrew Jackson signs the Indian Removal Act into law, enabling the federal government to negotiate with Native American tribes for their ancestral lands within existing U.S. state borders, in exchange for unsettled land west of the Mississippi River. As a result, some 60,000 Native Americans are forced westward into “Indian Territory” (present-day Oklahoma). Their forced mass migration, which results in 4,000+ deaths, becomes known as the Trail of Tears.
- D) The Dionne quintuplets, the first known to survive infancy, are born in Ontario. The five girls were housed for their first nine years in a kind of "baby zoo," ogled by thousands of tourists daily.
Hint: Some say Harambe was the last straw holding the universe together |
