📜 June 3: On This Day in History | | Walk among the stars | Image: Space.com | Each of the following events happened on June 3. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) Major Edward H. White II opens the hatch of the Gemini 4 spacecraft and steps out 120 miles above Earth, becoming the first American astronaut to walk in space. He’s attached to the craft by a 25-foot tether, and controls his movements with a hand-held oxygen jet-propulsion gun.
- B) The Zoot Suit Riots begin in Los Angeles. A group of US sailors marches through downtown LA carrying makeshift weapons and starts attacking anyone wearing a “zoot suit”—the baggy wool pants, oversized coats, and porkpie hats favored by many young men of color at the time.
- C) America’s first electric power line carries energy across 14 miles to Portland, Oregon, pioneering modern electrical transmission. Few, if any, homes have any electrical wiring at the time, though that would soon change.
- D) The Chinese government authorizes its soldiers and tanks to reclaim Beijing’s Tiananmen Square at all costs from protesters for democratic reform. The troops have forcibly cleared the square by the next day, killing hundreds and arresting thousands.
Hint: A “zoot suit” is a two-piece suit |
