📜 June 5: On This Day in History

Kennedy curse continues

Image: PBS

Each of the following events happened on June 5. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Senator Robert F. Kennedy, a leading US presidential candidate, is fatally shot at Los Angeles’ Ambassador Hotel right after delivering his victory speech for winning California’s Democratic presidential primary. Kennedy is pronounced dead one day later.
  • B) A huge section of Constantinople, Turkey, is set ablaze when a young girl trips carrying a hot piece of charcoal to her family’s kitchen, sending it out the window and onto an adjacent roof. When the smoke finally clears, ~9,000 homes have been destroyed and ~2,000 people killed.
  • C) A US district court rules that bus segregation is unconstitutional, a direct result of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The decision is later affirmed by the Supreme Court, effectively banning segregation on public transportation nationwide.
  • D) The Guardian publishes the first in a series of reports put together from documents leaked by NSA contractor Edward Snowden, which show the US government is spying on its own people including law-abiding citizens.

Hint: Robert was the 3rd-oldest Kennedy brother in his family
