📜 June 11: On This Day in History

Breaking down barriers

Image: US National Archives

Each of the following events happened on June 12. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) In one of his most famous Cold War speeches, President Ronald Reagan challenges Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down” the Berlin Wall, a symbol of the repressive Communist era in a divided Germany.
  • B) Nicole Brown Simpson, former star NFL running back O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife, and her friend Ron Goldman are brutally stabbed to death outside Nicole’s home in Brentwood, California, in what quickly becomes one of the most highly publicized trials of the century. With overwhelming evidence against him, Simpson becomes the chief suspect.
  • C) Scientists publish the discovery of what may be the oldest artwork in the Americas: an engraving of an Ice Age mammoth on a fossil bone likely at least 13,000 years old. The bone, found in Florida, likely came from a mammoth, mastodon, or giant sloth.
  • D) Nelson Mandela and seven others are sentenced to life imprisonment for treason, sabotage, and conspiracy against South Africa's apartheid government. Mandela's long incarceration would become a rallying point for the anti-apartheid movement and a powerful symbol of resistance.

Hint: The wall split Berlin into 2 sides: East and West.
