The Trump administration's newly signed peace agreement with Iran is already facing major headwinds.

On Sunday, Iranian officials temporarily suspended ongoing peace talks with the US after President Trump threatened fresh military action against Iran over its support for Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group currently fighting Israel in Lebanon.

Iranian state media argued the comments violated a preliminary agreement signed last week, which included a commitment that neither side would attack or threaten the other.

The latest dispute centers on Lebanon, where fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has continued despite the deal's call for an end to hostilities. Iran has accused the US of failing to help enforce that portion of the agreement, while Trump warned Tehran to rein in Hezbollah or face additional US strikes.

A peace deal at risk

The memorandum of understanding signed last Wednesday featured several major provisions, including agreements for:

• Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
• The US to drop its blockade of Iranian ports, while laying out a framework with regional partners to establish a $300 billion fund for Iran's reconstruction.
• Both the US and Iran to avoid attacking or threatening one another.
• Joint efforts to end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
• A 60-day negotiating process aimed at reaching a broader agreement on Iran's nuclear program.

Looking ahead…Vice President JD Vance and Iranian negotiators met in Switzerland on Sunday for the first talks held under last week's agreement, with Iranian officials remaining for future talks this week despite the latest drama.

Upcoming negotiations are expected to focus on Iran's nuclear program, including its stockpile of enriched uranium, future enrichment limits, sanctions relief, expanded Iranian oil sales, and access to frozen Iranian assets.

The Trump administration wants Tehran to either destroy or turn over its enriched uranium stockpile and halt future enrichment, while Iranian officials have expressed openness to reducing enrichment levels and temporarily pausing enrichment activities.
