📜 June 23: On This Day in History

Birth of the keyboard

Image: Britannica

Each of the following events happened on June 23. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Christopher Latham Sholes patents the QWERTY typewriter, revolutionizing keyboard communication. His first version is cobbled together using an old table, a circular piece of glass, a telegraph key and piano wire.
  • B) Title IX enacted into federal law, prohibiting federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex. Title IX is credited with decreasing the dropout rate of girls from high school, and increasing the amount of women who pursue higher education and complete college degrees.
  • C) Some 99.95% of Egyptian voters elect Gamal Abdel Nasser as the first president of the Republic of Egypt. Nasser, who toppled the Egyptian monarchy in an earlier military coup, is the only presidential candidate on the ballot. His ascendance ends ~2,300 years of rule by foreigners, dating back to Alexander the Great.
  • D) Tim Burton’s Batman is released in theaters. Starring Michael Keaton as the titular superhero and Jack Nicholson as The Joker, the film would earn ~$100 million in its first ten days of release.

Hint: Four actors have starred as Batman since Keaton’s debut
