📜 June 24: On This Day in History | | Kick off your Sunday shoes | Image: JSTOR Daily | Each of the following events happened on June 24. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) Men, women, and children gather in the streets of Aachen, Germany, and dance as if in a trance for hours, even days, until they collapse from exhaustion. It marks the earliest—and worst—widely documented major outbreak of choreomania (or dancing plague), a form of socially contagious mass psychogenic illness. Other outbreaks would occur across Europe in later decades, but cases eventually cease to be reported.
- B) Disney orders a subsidiary record label to recall 100,000 already shipped copies of an Insane Clown Posse album on the day of its planned release. The issue at hand: the graphic nature of the Detroit “horror-core” rap duo’s lyrics, which Disney deemed inappropriately graphic.
- C) The Soviet Union blocks all road and rail traffic to and from West Berlin, in one of the most dramatic standoffs of the Cold War. The blockade turns out poorly for the Soviets, who drew international pushback for the move, while the US would quickly organize a massive airlift of supplies into West Berlin in one of the greatest logistical efforts ever.
- D) American businessman Kenneth Arnold sees a number of objects “flying like saucers” while piloting a small plane over Mount Rainier in Washington. It’s considered the first modern sighting of UFOs, and gives rise to the term flying saucer.
Hint: Disney's recall focused on Insane Clown Posse’s 4th album |
