📜 June 29: On This Day in History

The future is calling

Image: The Guardian

Each of the following events happened on June 29. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Apple releases the first iPhone, revolutionizing the mobile phone industry and transforming human communication with its sleek design and pioneering touch interface that allows users to pinch, zoom and swipe.
  • B) 17-year-old Pelé leads Brazil to its first World Cup victory, defeating host nation Sweden 5-2 in the final game. Brazil came into the tournament as a favorite and did not disappoint, thrilling the world with their spectacular play.
  • C) The Globe Theatre, where most of William Shakespeare’s plays debuted, burns down. The Globe was built by Shakespeare’s acting company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, from the timbers of London’s first permanent theater, Burbage’s Theater.
  • D) In Furman v. Georgia, the US Supreme Court rules by a vote of 5-4 that capital punishment is unconstitutional. The majority holds that the death penalty qualifies as “cruel and unusual punishment” primarily because states employed execution in “arbitrary and capricious ways,” especially in regard to race.

Hint: The Globe was made using wood from London’s 1st theater
