📜 July 2: On This Day in History | | Let freedom ring | Image: World History Encyclopedia | Each of the following events happened on July 2. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The Second Continental Congress, assembled in Philadelphia, formally adopts a resolution for independence from Great Britain. John Adams wrote that July 2 would be celebrated as the most memorable epoch in the history of America—but instead, the day has been largely forgotten in favor of July 4, when the Declaration of Independence was adopted.
- B) The Lockheed aircraft carrying American aviator Amelia Earhart and navigator Frederick Noonan is reported missing near Howland Island in the Pacific. The pair were attempting to fly around the world when they lost their bearings during the most challenging leg of the global journey: from Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island, a tiny Pacific island 2,227 nautical miles away.
- C) President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act into law. It prohibits racial discrimination in employment and education, and outlaws racial segregation in public places like schools, buses, parks and swimming pools.
- D) American businessman Sam Walton opens the first Walmart (then known as Wal-Mart) store, in Rogers, Arkansas. It marks the start of what will become the largest retail sales chain in US history.
Hint: People often forget 2 people were in the plane when Amelia Earhart disappeared. |
