- C) The US Supreme Court rules 5-4 that, while still falling under federal jurisdiction, nearly half of Oklahoma is within a Native American reservation and isn’t subject to state jurisdiction in cases involving major crimes, based on an 1833 treaty with the Muscogee Nation.
- D) Catherine, wife of Russia’s new emperor, Peter III, rallies the army regiments of St. Petersburg against her husband and is proclaimed sole empress of Russia. More commonly known as Catherine the Great, she would stay on the throne for the next 34 years, more than any other female ruler in Russian history.
