📜 July 14: On This Day in History | | Monkey business | Image: Discover Africa Safaris | Each of the following events happened on July 14. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) British ethologist Jane Goodall first arrives at what would become Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania, where she soon starts conducting groundbreaking research on chimpanzees. Goodall would end up challenging two long-standing beliefs: that only humans can construct and use tools, and that chimpanzees are vegetarians.
- B) Sheriff Pat Garrett shoots Henry McCarty, aka “Billy the Kid,” to death at the Maxwell Ranch in New Mexico. Garrett had been tracking Billy for three months, after the gunslinger escaped from prison only days before his scheduled execution.
- C) Atlanta Braves slugger Henry “Hank” Aaron hits the 500th home run of his career. Aaron would eventually retire with an MLB-record 755 home runs in his Hall-of-Fame career, also setting all-time marks for RBIs, extra base hits, and total bases.
- D) Parisian revolutionaries and mutinous troops storm and dismantle the Bastille, a royal fortress, prison, and symbol of tyranny among the French monarchy. It signals the start of the French Revolution, a decade of political turmoil and terror in which King Louis XVI is overthrown and tens of thousands of people—including Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette—are executed.
Hint: Most gunslingers carry 2 pistols |
