• B) NY Yankees slugger Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 56 games, an all-time MLB record that still stands today. The next day he goes 0 for 4, breaking the streak.
• C) John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, die when the single-engine plane that Kennedy is piloting crashes into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
• D) The Manhattan Project yields explosive results as the first atom bomb is successfully tested in Alamogordo, New Mexico. The explosion’s mushroom cloud stretches ~40,000 feet into the air and generates the destructive power of 15,000–20,000 tons of TNT.
