📜 July 20: On This Day in History

A Christmas movie

Image: Variety

Each of the following events happened on July 20. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Die Hard, an action film starring Bruce Willis as a wisecracking NYC cop, opens in theaters. A huge box-office hit, the film would establish Willis as a movie star and spawn four sequels.
  • B) Adolf Hitler cheats death as a bomb planted in a briefcase goes off as part of Operation Valkyrie—but fails to kill the Nazi leader. The operation was the brainchild of High-ranking German officials who believed Hitler was leading Germany in a suicidal war on two fronts.
  • C) The Viking 1, an unmanned US planetary probe, successfully lands on the surface of Mars. It touches down and sends back the first close-up photographs of the rust-colored Martian surface, in the first fully successful Mars landing in history.
  • D) Five years after defeating Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer at the infamous Battle of the Little Bighorn, Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull surrenders to the US Army, which promises amnesty for him and his followers.

Hint: There were 4 more Die Hard movies after the original
