📜 July 21: On This Day in History | | Wild Bill draws | Image: MeisterDrucke | Each of the following events happened on July 21. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) Wild Bill Hickok shoots Dave Tutt dead in the market square of Springfield, Missouri, in what's believed to be the first true Western quick-draw shootout. It resulted from a quarrel the night before, either over a card game or a woman, according to onlookers.
- B) The Aswan High Dam across the Nile River in Egypt is completed after 11 years of construction. The massive $1 billion dam, which measures 2+ miles long at its crest, ends the cycle of flood and drought in the Nile River region and exploits a tremendous source of renewable energy.
- C) A powerful earthquake off the coast of Greece causes a tsunami that devastates the city of Alexandria, Egypt. Scientists now estimate the quake was actually two tremors in succession, the largest with a magnitude of 8.0.
- D) The first major land battle of the Civil War is fought. A large Union force is routed at the First Battle of Bull Run by Confederate General Pierre G.T. Beauregard’s troops.
Hint: Old Western towns are mostly known for 3 things: drinking, gambling, and guns |
