• C) A powerful earthquake off the coast of Greece causes a tsunami that devastates the city of Alexandria, Egypt. Scientists now estimate the quake was actually two tremors in succession, the largest with a magnitude of 8.0.
• D) The first major land battle of the Civil War is fought. A large Union force is routed at the First Battle of Bull Run by Confederate General Pierre G.T. Beauregard’s troops.
