  • A) American history scholar Hiram Bingham gets his first look at the ruins of Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca settlement in Peru that’s now one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Machu Picchu is believed to have been a summer retreat for ancient Inca leaders, with its existence known and preserved by local Indigenous families.
  • B) US cyclist Lance Armstrong wins a record-setting seventh consecutive Tour de France and retires from the sport. He would later have his titles stripped and receive a lifetime ban for performance-enhancing drug use.
  • C) After 17 months and many miles of travel, Brigham Young leads 148 pioneers into Utah’s Valley of the Great Salt Lake. The pioneers soon begin preparations for the thousands of followers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormons) who would soon follow.
  • D) Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic, is released in theaters. The film, starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, is nominated for 11 Academy Awards and ends up winning five Oscars, including Best Director.
