• B) President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. Former President Harry Truman is enrolled as Medicare’s first beneficiary at the bill-signing ceremony.
• C) Two years after pushing to have the phrase “under God” inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a law officially declaring “In God We Trust” to be America’s official motto.
• D) Former Teamsters union president Jimmy Hoffa disappears in Bloomfield Hills, MI, under mysterious circumstances. Hoffa went to a restaurant in suburban Detroit for what is thought to have been a meeting with Teamster officials. He’s never seen again, and later legally declared “presumed dead.” The case remains unsolved to this day.
