📜 August 3: On This Day in History | | Sailing the ocean blue | Image: Britannica | Each of the following events happened on August 3. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets sail from Spain in command of three ships—the Santa María, the Pinta and the Niña—on a journey to find a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia. He would instead land in the Caribbean, kicking off an era of Western European contact and colonization in the Americas.
- B) The USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled 1,830 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. It then steamed on to Iceland, pioneering a new and shorter route from the Pacific to the Atlantic.
- C) Jesse Owens, one of 18 Black athletes on the US team at the Berlin Olympics, wins the first of four gold medals in track and field, the most of any American at the Games. He’s later credited by ESPN with "single-handedly crushing Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy."
- D) Two rival leagues, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and National Basketball League (NBL), merge to form the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Hint: The 3 point line has since become a major part of NBA basketball |
