Each of the following events happened on August 4. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) The first US Congress authorizes the construction of 10 vessels to patrol American ports from Massachusetts to Georgia, forming the US Coast Guard. The brainchild of Alexander Hamilton, the USCG is tasked with intercepting marine smugglers and collecting tariffs on imported goods.
  • B) NASA launches its Phoenix space probe, which lands on Mars one year later. Phoenix’s discoveries over the years include finding the existence of water ice beneath the red planet’s surface.
  • C) Britain takes control of Gibraltar after Spain surrenders during the War of the Spanish Succession. Gibraltar, known as “The Rock” after its massive and famous limestone cliff, subsequently becomes a British colony and a symbol of its naval strength.
  • D) Oscar Pistorius of South Africa becomes the first amputee to compete at the Olympics, running in an opening heat of the men’s 400-meter. Pistorius finishes second and advances to the semifinals in London, where he finishes last out of eight runners.

Hint: Pistorius mainly competed in the four-hundred meter race
