🤗 The Sweet Spotlight | | The 11-year-old kicking up a stink in the best way possible | Images: CTV News Toronto | Eleven-year-old Ashton Meyer decided to break the mold of opening a lemonade stand to make some extra cash this summer, and opted for cleaning garbage bins instead. The sixth-grader from York Region, Ontario, is the recent founder of YourBinCleaning, a business that's turning one of the dirtiest household chores into a wholesome success story. - The idea started with a conversation with his dad, who initially suggested Ashton earn money by helping older neighbors bring their bins to and from the curb.
- Before long, the pair landed on the idea of cleaning them, too.
Armed with a pressure washer and plenty of determination, Ashton started knocking on doors this past May. The first rejection hit hard enough to bring him to tears, but the go-getter didn't let it stop him. He kept introducing himself to neighbors, pitching his business one house at a time, and slowly built a loyal customer base. Today, Ashton has 30-40 regular customers and spends part of each week cleaning bins, with the rest dedicated to finding new ones. |
| Images: YourBinCleaning/Instagram (2) | The business has also become a major online hit. Videos of Ashton making his rounds have helped YourBinCleaning grow to 100,000+ Instagram followers, opening the door to TV appearances and plenty of encouragement from strangers. Some supporters even donated money so Ashton can clean bins free of charge for seniors and people with disabilities. Ashton already has plans for when garbage-bin season winds down, with designs of offering leaf raking, snow removal, lawn mowing, and garden cleanups throughout the year. According to Ashton's dad, the biggest payoff has nothing to do with the extra spending money. It's watching his son build confidence, learn to bounce back from rejection, and discover what a little hard work can accomplish in real time. |

📸 Pic of the Week | | Hop on the Curiosity Mobile | Image: Scott Shigeoka | 🚙 Six months ago, author and “curiosity expert” Scott Shigeoka hit the road in his purple Curiosity Mobile to explore what he calls America’s “belief gap.” - The idea is based on research that finds most Americans want to live in a democracy where everyone is cared for, but many doubt that kind of society is possible.
- During his road trip, Scott connected with people across the country, from farmers to refugees to teenagers passionate about the environment.
By asking questions and listening to their stories, he found common ground with people who might not otherwise cross paths, and a whole lot of hope along the way. |

😇 Mindfulness Moments | | Ever heard of the “opening shift” trend? | It’s like working at a restaurant or store, but at home. The trend is the latest effort to romanticize everyday life by creating an “opening shift” for yourself upon waking up. By organizing yourself in the mornings, you can set the tone for the day—and also set yourself up for success. Here's how: - Sit down and decide what your priorities are in the mornings. Whether it's to destress, be productive, or boost your energy, figuring out your main goal will help you determine what should be part of your opening shift.
- Write down step-by-step instructions like you would for an “employee” in your house (ex: turn off alarm, get up, brush your teeth, make the bed, do a 10-minute declutter, etc).
- Write down your morning shift responsibilities and put them somewhere you will see them: on the fridge, nightstand, or maybe your bathroom mirror.
- Stick to it! The longer we adopt new habits, the more likely we are to maintain them.
As a fellow night owl, I’m going to try this with you; maybe it’ll make getting out of bed a little more bearable. 🤪 |

🏆 What’s Your Win? | | Welcome to What’s Your Win?, the section of the newsletter where we celebrate all of the good news happening right here in our community. Sadly, we didn’t receive any new submissions this week (cue tiny violin), so I’m featuring some responses from editions past. It’s never too late to celebrate! Check them out here: 🏀 One anonymous subscriber from Chicago was proud of his court skills: - “I am a senior in high school. Yesterday, our team won the basketball game on our home court. As the center, I have a responsibility to get rebounds and be strong under the basket. Yesterday, I believe I did just that, although I still have a lot to work on. I've realized I simply need to be confident about playing!”
🍳 Vicki R. from UT served up food and kindness: - “I have been working so hard that I've been ignoring myself and other important things. This last weekend, though, I spent the day with my family doing a Dutch Oven Contest to serve 200 good people with a 3 course meal! We did not win the competition, but we won with the amount of amazing fun and team spirit we all had , along with the feeling of a wonderful warm community! It took almost all of Saturday, and wore myself out, but loved every minute of it!"
👩🏫 Another anonymous reader from IL was thankful for her classroom: - “I celebrated my first day back to school with students for the new year. The excitement and curiosity from my students has really reinvigorated me. I'm ready for a great year!”
